6 Areas Hypnotherapy Can Help PTSD

In reading Joan Courtney’s book, PTSD: A Guide to the Basics, I was reminded of just how prevalent this

condition has become. When I hear the term I first think about combat veterans. Simply looking at the definition tells us that it affects a much larger population. “PTSD is a cluster of symptoms coming from exposure to an overwhelming stressful event or series of events, such as war, rape or abuse.”

The events causing PTSD might also be a sudden, natural occurrence such as an earthquake or a tsunami, man made disasters as in the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11 which caused PTSD for many observers and first responders.

Children living in an abusive environment suffer from PTSD as a result of watching dad come home drunk and beating up mom. Secondary PTSD from being glued to an iPhone or television for news is fast becoming an epidemic.

Hypnotherapy can be helpful in alleviating symptoms of PTSD, such as

  • Anxiety and Panic – Being in a state of constant alarm is hard on the physical body but can be alleviated with hypnosis.
  • Fears and Phobias – Hypnotherapy helps to neutralize the emotional charge in past traumatic events. Clients remember what happened but no longer feel the fear.
  • Low Self-esteem –  Low self-esteem is one of the easiest aspects to heal often simply by reprogramming the subconscious mind.
  • Insomnia and Nightmares – Self hypnosis, especially for sleep, helps clients gain confidence, giving hope for a brighter future.
  • Stress and Anger – hypnotherapy gives clients a set of tools to banish anger and relieve stress.
  • Dissociation – Hypnosis provides a safe and comfortable space to release the energy of the negative reactions to old traumatic memories.
